CREA-TEC ▸ Cultivating Responsible Engagement with AI Technology to Empower Creatives

About the CREA-TEC project

What is CREA-TEC?

Cultivating Responsible Engagement with AI Technology to Empower Creatives (CREA-TEC) is a collaborative research project exploring how generative artificial intelligence is reshaping creative practices, and how it can be integrated in responsible and ethical ways.

Led by Dr Caterina Moruzzi at the University of Edinburgh in collaboration with Adobe, the project brings together creatives, academics, and creative communities to develop shared insights into the design and use of AI tools.

CREA-TEC is supported by the Bridging Responsible AI Divides programme and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

But it raises many important questions...

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) stands as one of the most disruptive technological advancements since the emergence of the internet.

Within the realm of creativity, dominant techno-positivist imaginaries surrounding GenAI foreground themes of efficiency, productivity, and democratisation. These narratives — shaped predominantly by technological stakeholders and media discourse rather than by creative practitioners themselves — tend to privilege automation and optimisation over the material, embodied, and iterative dimensions of creative labour. Existing research, however, suggests that creative practitioners hold far more ambivalent and contested views regarding the implications of AI within their work, positioning many between utopian visions of augmented creativity and productivity, and dystopian anxieties surrounding deskilling, precarity, and creative obsolescence.

The CREA-TEC project addresses the challenge of guiding responsible innovation in the development of AI-assisted technologies for the production and consumption of creative content. Through interdisciplinary and practice-based research, the project seeks to foreground the perspectives, values, and lived experiences of creative practitioners in ongoing debates concerning the future of human creativity and AI.
